Quick Update

2 min read
I still have some old projects I want to finish and I want to test new materials and try different drawing subjects, but right now I have 3 main pieces I need to get finished. Those are as follows in order of most important and needs to be started/finished ASAP to I have time but want it done:

--9" x 12" Acrylic portrait of my friend and her boyfriend for her boyrfriend's birthday (both of their birthdays are early November, so ideally I would like to have this done by mid October, but considering I haven't finished the rough outline yet, I don't know the exact timeline yet.)

--9" x 12" Acrylic portrait of a Siamese for my dad's girlfriend (she never specified when she wanted it, but if I am finishing the one painting by November, I think tis one should be done before Christmas so it should end up as a Christmas present.)

--Art Trade of a Sphynx cat for a friend (this was supposed to be completed a LONG time ago, but I feel that this should also get completed somewhere between November and Christmas if I work on it while the paint dries.)

Hopefully college (and hopefully a job soon) won't affect my desire to draw and paint too much. I mean, I'm taking an art history class right now so it's still there, but knowing myself, I can easily become bored with my art projects, hence some unfinished stuff and the Sphynx drawing.

I haven't had time to focus on doing art for fun recently. I do take fundamentals of art (I wanted to get out of theater) so I am doing something artistic at least every other day. Right now I am almost done a brown painting (a still life of brown objects painted only using the primary colors plus black and white). I may take photos of what I have complete in class but I don't know yet.

I do have I think at least one completed drawing (the stingrays) and some update photos to share so I will do that shortly. However, the update photos of the hairless cat drawing I'm about to share won't be updated for a while because I am putting that on hold (its part of a very flexible art trade) because I have two more requests to do for the friend of mine that I drew recently. I am doing another portrait of herself for her and one of Drake. Both of the drawings will be done in a sort of "color pop" type of thing where I am going to focus on one aspect and have it colored and the rest will be grayscale. The portrait of Drake will have a pink jacket and sky blue pants (she gave me a reference photo to use) where as the skin and a slight background will be done with graphite pencil (or charcoal I am not sure yet). The portrait oh my friend will be done in the same way but she is wearing a beautiful red dress so that will be red and the rest will be graphite or charcoal.

I also got a bunch of Faber-Castell products for Christmas and some new sketchbooks so that's fun! The colored portions of the drawings will be done with Polychromos (I used them for the first time on a friend's birthday card and I love them so much, and so so so much more than Prismacolor). The hairless cat drawing will be done fully in polychromos, and even though I have a relatively small set (36 I think), I can easily color match the colors of the reference photo I am using.

I hope to sketch more now that I have more sketchbooks to allow for sketches and completed works at the same time. I have a small hardcover sketchbook I received from a friend for my birthday and pencils cheaper than my Faber-Castell ones that I will use to practice my skills and start new skills.

I also think the art and drawing club I am in is going to do landscape pieces done in charcoal and I'm not 100% sure if I will be able to take a picture of the landscape and draw from a picture like I usually do or if it will be from life which I rarely do.

Speaking of drawing from life, that is what I am doing with the brown painting, and have done quite a few gesture drawings in class, but they aren't as exact as I would like and I did not have a lot of time for even a decent gesture drawing, but I do have another painting and some graphite pieces and an oil pastel piece (the graphite we used was really crappy quality in my opinion based on using Faber-Castell and other brands of art pencils) that I am going to try and take good photos of.

I also did a sort of request/commission with a friend of mine of another student and it is a 48" x 48" painting that we are currently trying to get a frame for although we don't quite know yet if it will be cheaper to make one versus buying a custom frame (our teacher is going to provide the money for the frame).

So this was a long update, but I do hope to share more pieces and doodles or what not. Hopefully I'll get time to even just doodle.
